Do It Yourself Energy Audit

by PathStone Staff on 07/22/13

Good Afternoon!

A professional home energy audit is the most comprehensive way to see where your home is letting energy escape or being misused. However, you can start the audit process yourself by taking the time to perform a do-it-yourself audit and inspect a number of home mechanical issues.

Locate any air leaks and insufficient vent sealing. If energy is escaping, these areas could be costing you big, and at the very least are causing your equipment to work harder (lowering the expected lifetime) and your home to be less comfortable. Many homes could see hundreds in annual energy savings.

You can also inspect insulation, heating and cooling systems, ventilation, lighting and appliances. While doing this, it is also a good idea to have energy billing statements from the last 1 to 2 years for reference.

Your audit may have been a confidence booster for you and your home or it could have revealed a number of issues. After you have completed your DIY audit, you may have some questions as to what to do next. If you found that your home could use energy efficient insulation, sealing, or HVAC systems improvements but are not a professional, you may want to contact a licensed local contractor to perform a professional energy audit. Upgrades like new lighting, ENERGY STAR rated appliances and other small alterations are simple improvements that do not require a great deal of expertise.

Contact us at SaveEnergy@PathStone.org or call (585) 442-2030 for information on how to receive a FREE professional home energy audit!

Keep Your Home More Comfortable and Temperate

by PathStone Staff on 07/16/13

Good Afternoon!

The high heating bills of winter are far off, but each season tests your home comfort in different ways. Keeping your home comfortable in the summer months can be difficult and costly, so why not change that?

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has an array of income-based improvement programs available to all New York residents, both homeowners and renters. These programs are an excellent way to improve comfort and health conditions in the home, especially to infants, the elderly and those who are more susceptible to respiratory issues. The work, depending on the individual scope, will reduce the costs associated with heating, cooling and electricity consumption for the house and also has a favorable impact on the value of your home. In addition, your energy reduction will work to better local communities through reducing the strain on the environment and creating green jobs at home.

PathStone offers several affordable state and federal subsidies and grant programs to help pay for energy efficient improvements to your home. We will assist you every step of the way, whether it involves financial assistance, explanation of program details, reviewing your energy audit or giving general education about home energy use and lowering utility costs.

To schedule an appointment for information on our programs and services, please contact us at 585-442-2030. For more information, see our Services or Education or FAQ. Interested in services for Commercial or Industrial Properties?

LED Lighting: Future Tech

by PathStone Staff on 06/03/13

What uses 80-90 percent less energy, produces 96 percent less heat, does not emit UV light and is 100 percent recyclable? The answer to these questions (and your high energy bills) is Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs.

Cool to the touch and unsurpassed in durability, this relatively new technology is paving the way for energy efficient indoor and outdoor applications. LED bulbs DO NOT contain mercury or other toxic materials used in Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs), meaning they are safe for the environment and most importantly, you and your loved ones.

Oh and the savings... LED bulbs are rated last up to 20 times longer than standard incandescent lights, not to mention superior efficacy (lumen output per watt). To see how much you can save over the lifetime of an LED lighting solution vs. incandescent bulbs, see the Easy Savings Calculator located on the left side bar of our home page. In most applications, you will see your initial investment paid off with energy savings in two years or less (around the time your incandescent bulb will burn out).

Another pro to "warm spectrum" LEDs is that they do not emit light in the UV or blue spectra, which insects are most attracted to. That means less watts AND less swats.

So will you stay heated this summer with incandescent bulbs or be cool and save some green with LEDs? The choice, and the savings, are yours.
